Klabin expands its Wedge use

Klabin is expanding its Wedge use for its new mill site in Ortigueira, Brazil.

The aim is to maintain the same practicality and speed in analyses as we have experienced in our other mills.
Elielson Batista, Process Engineer, Klabin

Klabin has been using Wedge since 2018. Features such as modeling, linear regressions, multivariate correlations with dynamic compensation of process delays have been in active use. Also, the flexibility to incorporate multiple databases in a single system has been valued.

Wedge has facilitated quick responses and speedier support for decision-making. It has been especially valuable for discovering disturbances and identifying opportunities to optimize our processes.
– Elielson Batista

The new Wedge deployment is part of the Puma II Project which is the biggest investment in Klabin’s history.  Its operation is an important milestone in Klabin’s expansion cycle, which reinforces its capacity for sustainable growth combined with technology.

CFLogistics: LogForce data was used in a study that led to legislation changes

We love to help our customers and the forest industry to make the most of data. One nice example of this is how data extracted from our CFLogistics: LogForce application was used in a study which led to legislation changes in Finland.

In autumn 2020, the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) was investigating the need for changes to the so-called Forest Damage Act, as spruce bark beetles cause more and more damage due to global warming. With the help of data extracted from CFLogistics: LogForce, they were able to estimate how the timber flows and costs of transport would change if the time limit for the removal of barked coniferous wood were tightened in some parts of the country.

On the basis of the study, the Natural Resources Institute Finland made a number of recommendations that have led the Finnish government to submit a proposal to Parliament to amend the Forest Damage Act. Under the amendment, some of the areas in Zone B of the current Forest Damage Act will be transferred to Zone A, which will tighten the time limit for the transport of spruce timber harvested before June 1 from the roadside storages to wood terminals and log yards in the transferred areas. The changes are due to enter into force at the beginning of 2022.

Trimble Forestry at GeoForum Summit

Today we had the pleasure of hosting an interesting discussion at the GeoForum Summit about how to utilize geospatial data in operational management in forestry.

Our Perttu Aunola summed up the debate: Good technical capabilities and well-functioning networks enable us to develop the entire value chain in forestry, both the processes of the wood supply chain and the sustainability, safety and productivity of work in the forest.

Thank you for joining the discussion Koneyrittäjät, University of Eastern Finland and Metsäteho Oy.

Trimble’s Connected Forest™ Facilitates Fast Start for Binderholz’s New Live Oak, Florida Mill

(Vancouver, British Columbia – September 21, 2021) The Binderholz Group, Trimble and Microtec jointly announced today that the Binderholz Live Oak Mill in Florida was brought to full operational status in a short span of time. The timeline is described as follows:

Aug 21, 2020  The sawmill was purchased following an auction
Sep 21, 2020  Closing took place
Jan 04, 2021  The software implementation contract with Trimble was finalized
Jan 07, 2021  The software implementation project with Trimble kicked-off
Feb 15, 2021  The log sorting line was fully operational
Mar 15, 2021  The sawmill was fully operational
Jul 01, 2021  The software systems were on full production footing

The turnaround time from weighing a truckload of logs using Trimble’s Truck Scale Software (WeighWiz) to a production planner analyzing log cost information is approximately 15 minutes. Logs procured for the mill were processed by the state of the art, high speed log scanners from Microtec which measure log volume. The volumetric data is then fed into Trimble’s Log Inventory Management System (LIMS) via an automated interface. Complex, server-centric algorithms in LIMS compute log costs for thousands of logs per second. Binderholz’s downstream systems then access this information for production planning.

The software implementation was run on a tight ship. The sawmill received its first truckloads of roundwood logs on February 10, a mere 20 business days from the software project kick-off . “It was a very challenging schedule”, according to the Project Managers and Functional Leads representing all three parties. “We had many challenges but in the end we were able to find solutions for all of them as a team”, they further added. All three parties continue to ensure that round the clock support is at hand to resolve any arising issues and that the mill runs at optimal capacity.

An autumn full of moves is coming!
